Evacuation alert lifted for Spring Lake residents

Around 6:15 p.m. Saturday, the evacuation alert telling residents within a half-mile radius of a fire to evacuate to Spring Lake Presbyterian was lifted.

SPRING LAKE, Mich. — Ottawa County Emergency Management has lifted the evacuation alert given to some Spring Lake residents as of 6:15 p.m. on Saturday.

OCEM said the fire at 14638 Apple Drive in Spring Lake has been stabilized. Ottawa County Director of Emergency Management, Lou Hunt, said the fire was located at Linamar, formerly Mobex.

Around 5 p.m. OCEM had put an evacuation alert into effect, telling residents within a half-mile radius of the fire to evacuate to Spring Lake Presbyterian at 760 East Savidge.

Hunt said the fire was in a furnace used for casting and was contained.

However, out of an abundance of caution, they ordered the evacuation alert for a half-mile radius.

Hunt said when dealing with high temperatures used in casting, they wanted to ensure the surrounding community was safe.

Around 5:30 p.m. OCEM posted to their Facebook page stating an initial evacuation alert went to a larger group of people than expected. They reiterated that the alert was only meant for those within a half-mile radius of the fire.
