Teacher of the Week keeps little learners moving

A fun group of students were up and moving, and not just for our latest Teacher of the Week surprise. These students stay active all the time.

WYOMING, Mich. — A really fun group of students were up and moving, and not just for our latest Teacher of the Week surprise. These students stay active in this classroom all the time.

Sarah Kusmierski is our newest Teacher of the Week with Grand View Elementary School in Wyoming.

After the surprise, she said, “I am blown away. I was not expecting this at all, and it really makes me, makes me emotional.”

Principal Joseph Scotto told 13 ON YOUR SIDE, “Oh my gosh, I was so excited for Mrs. K and the students.”

“They did a really good job of tricking me into leaving the room,” said Kusmierski.

Scotto was also pleased with the turnout of the surprise, saying,  “She was so surprised, and the students did a great job celebrating her.”

This kindergarten teacher loves school and always has.

“I always thought I’d be like a high school teacher but then I started college and I thought, 'uh, this isn’t for me. This isn’t as fun as I’d like to have it,'” said Kusmierski.

She’s been teaching kindergarten ever since, for the last 18 years in the same classroom.

She said, “Kindergarten is special because they love school and they’re excited about everything.” She also said the job continues to make her happy. “This is just like my dream job that I’ve always wanted, and I haven’t ever left.”

She may never leave, but she’s always moving.

“We love movement in this class. So, everything we do, even if it’s a learning activity, we like to include movement with it,” said Kusmierski.

“We love to have our students engaged. That’s up and moving, talking to each other, engaging in some type of hands-on learning and Mrs. K. does a great job of that,” said the principal as he praised the Teacher of the Week. “She does a great job of going above and beyond each day to make her students feel valued and appreciated and she’s just overall a great veteran teacher to have in our building.”

“We love your children – everyone else’s children and want the best for them. So, it is nice to be recognized for that,” said Kusmierski.

“Teachers do an unbelievable job each and every day,” said Scotto.
