ZEELAND, Mich. — 13 ON YOUR SIDE was in Zeeland at Adams Elementary School for our latest Teacher of the Week surprise. A group of first graders eagerly helped us reveal this week’s choice.
Our newest Teacher of the Week, Sarah Vos, said, “I was very surprised,” after she walked into her classroom to see the students all gathered by the door.
The surprise was a success.
“Makes me feel pretty awesome, pretty special,” said Vos.
Mark Gronevelt is the principal at Adams Elementary. He said, “I’m not surprised because of how amazing our staff is here but it’s always great to celebrate and have staff noticed for the great things that they’re doing and how much they’re putting into kids."
Vos is a Zeeland native who’s been teaching for 13 years.
She said, “I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. There was really no question that I would do anything else. So, kind of my passion.”
“Mrs. Vos really goes above and beyond. She just really is one of the first to always step up and offer support for not only students but staff in the building, as well,” said Gronevelt.
Not expecting the recognition, Vos said, “I work hard. I love my job, but like you said, a lot of those days go unannounced,” adding, “You’re not sure if you’re making a difference or not.”
She works with students as they’re just beginning their academic careers.
"The growth in first grade is phenomenal and they come in as little learners and leave ready to take on the world. They learn to read and then they leave reading to learn,” said Vos.
She reaches students using more than just textbooks.
“If they know that they’re safe and loved here then the learning will come,” said Vos.
13 ON YOUR SIDE is hoping our teachers feel the love.
“Just knowing that people are noticing the effort that they put into that really is encouraging for teachers,” said Gronevelt.
Vos said, “I think it’s pretty awesome that someone was wanting to recognize me personally and thank you to them.”
