IONIA COUNTY, Mich. — An Ionia County man is still pinching himself after discovering he won a $1 million Powerball prize from the Michigan Lottery.

78-year-old Charles Wolthuis matched the numbers for the Oct. 2 drawing: 12-26-27-43-47. He bought his winning ticket at Purk's in Ionia.

Wolthuis said he plays Powerball each drawing and couldn't believe he'd won.

“I checked my ticket and saw I’d matched five numbers, but I wasn’t sure what I’d won," Wolthuis said. "I called my daughter and asked her to check and see what the prize is for matching five numbers. It was quiet for a minute, and then she said: ‘Dad, you won $1 million!’"

“I woke up my wife and told her we won $1 million, but she thought I was kidding and went back to bed. When she woke up, she told me she had a dream that we won the Lottery. I said: ‘We did! That wasn’t a dream, we won $1 million!’”

Wolthuis recently claimed his winnings at the Michigan Lottery headquarters. He plans to pay off his home and buy a new truck with the prize.

The Powerball drawing takes place at 10:59 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and may be watched live online here. Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington D.C., U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
