'Loving mother:' Family remembers Wyoming murder victim

"She's been robbed before, four or five times, and every time she's taken the suspect down herself."

WAYLAND, Mich. — "We got a phone call about 7:10 this morning," says Manona Berkenpas a close friend of Shannon Rozinski-Shoen.

"No, not our Shannon, she's the strongest person we know," says Berkenpas.

The call was from police informing them there had been a robbery at the Marathon gas station at 28th Street SW and Buchanan Avenue in Wyoming. Berkenpas' close friend and mother to her step-children, Shannon Rozanski-Schoen, was working at the gas station that morning.

"She's been robbed before, four or five times, and every time she's taken the suspect down herself," says Berkenpas.

But this time Shannon wasn't able to stop him. Police say she was shot and killed during the robbery.

"She was the most loving and caring and eccentric person I have ever met in my life. If someone came into her gas station and looked hungry, she would feed them. She would give the shirt off her back to a stranger, that's the kind of person Shannon was," says Berkenpas.

"When you look at your daughters or your mothers just remember to say I love you. Because you never know when it could all be taken away," says Berkenpas.
