Michigan expands vaccine eligibility

The governor says vaccinations aren't happening fast enough, so they're expanding who's eligible.

LANSING, Mich. — Starting on Monday, thousands more people in Michigan will be eligible to get a COVID-19 vaccine.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer says vaccinations aren't moving fast enough. So they are expanding the pool of people who can sign up - which you should be able to do online no later than Monday.

These are the new groups eligible:

  • People 65 and older.
  • Teachers, pre-school through high school.
  • First responders and prison staff.
  • Childcare workers.
  • Frontline state and federal workers.

Whitmer says, "We don't have the vaccination police. We want to prioritize based on how many people are vulnerable, or have contacts with the public, or in essential services. Makes sense, right? Because this is who we all rely on. However, we want numbers. We want more people to get vaccinated. That's why we are broadening it at this juncture. And we believe this opens it up to a lot more people. And we're hopeful that people do their part and get their shot."

By Monday, the state's Coronavirus task force website should have links to local health departments where you can make your appointment to get a vaccine.
