21-year-old Brandon Reyes believes this is the most important trip of his life.
"We want to push them to pass the DREAM Act, that is the main goal," says Reyes.
Brandon was brought to West Michigan as a child, his parents are undocumented immigrants. He's been able to work in Grand Rapids because of the DREAM act but that protection was put in jeopardy by the Trump administration in September.
"It caused a lot of stress, personally I ended up in the hospital because of the stress and went into depression," says Reyes.
Reyes is part of a group of about 70 Dreamers from Michigan who left Tuesday night, Dec. 5. for Washington DC. They'll be joined by thousands of other Dreamers from across the country for a rally in our nation's capitol on Wednesday.
After the rally, the Michigan Dreamers are hoping to meet with West Michigan Congressman Justin Amash. Their hope is to get a provision in the upcoming budget bill that would protect Dreamers permanently.
"My family is counting on me, we must get this done," says Reyes.
Some Michigan lawmakers have stressed the importance of protecting the DACA recipients. Rep. Fred Upton and 31 other members of Congress sign a letter to Paul Ryan which read:
DACA recipients — young people brought to American through no fault of their own — are contributing members of our communities and our economy. For many, this is the only country they have ever known. They are American in every way except their immigration status.”
