IONIA - A longstanding tradition of the Ionia Free Fair is the Governor's Luncheon.

This year's included the Lieutenant Governor and the Governor.

Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley is an Ionia County resident; he lives in Portland.

The pair appeared in front of a friendly crowd Friday as the Fair began its second day.

Governor Snyder urged the crowd to be "louder and prouder" in telling the story of Michigan's comeback. Snyder said the state's population has grown for two consecutive years. Most important, he said, is the improving spirit of Michiganders.

Asked about polls showing him in a tight race with democratic challenger Mark Schauer, the Governor said, "I don't make decisions based on polls. I'm proud of my record - we've created over a quarter million private sector jobs."
