WASHINGTON — When Super Bowl 58 gets underway in Las Vegas, fans will get to watch the kicks from a brand new perspective.
CBS announced this week all the new production elements coming to the big game with 165 cameras including a record number of 4K zoom extraction cameras and the introduction of "Doink" cameras for the first time ever.
The six "Doink" cameras will be embedded inside the field goal uprights to show "unprecedented angles of field goals and extra points. Cameras will have high resolution zoom capability and also be made available for super slow-motion replays."
The cameras are named for the cartoonish "Doink" sound a football makes when it hits the upright six-inch aluminum posts that make up the goal posts on NFL fields.
During a news conference with reporters this week, CBS Sports executives explained the inspiration for the "Doink" cameras came when Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker hit one of the goal posts during his first field goal attempt at last year's Super Bowl.
The executives told reporters it already tested the cameras during an Aug. 19 preseason game and during an October game at Allegiant Stadium. They said the results were encouraging enough to move forward with the planned Super Bowl debut.
Free pizza for a "Doink" in the Super Bowl
Separate from the CBS innovation, if there does happen to be a "Doink" during the Super Bowl fans can win free DIGIORNO pizza.
All you have to do is sign up online for a chance to win before Feb. 11. If a kick hits an upright or crossbar during the game, winners will be selected in a random drawing to receive a coupon for a free DIGIORNO pizza.
Only 2,500 free pizzas will be awarded if there's a "Doink," along with another 100 pizzas if it happens again, according to the sweepstakes rules.

Super Bowl LVIII (which stands for Super Bowl 58) kicks off on Sunday, Feb. 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, around 6:30 p.m. Eastern (5:30 p.m. Central Time, 4:30 p.m. Mountain Time and 3:30 p.m. Pacific Time).
What channel is the Super Bowl on?
The Super Bowl will air on CBS and there will be a kids-focused presentation of the game on Nickelodeon, marking the first time the Super Bowl has had an alternate broadcast on a separate network.
