Gas prices jump ahead of Memorial Day weekend

Gas prices are on the rise in West Michigan ahead of the holiday weekend, but an expert is predicting that some relief is on the way.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Drivers not only have to contend with traffic and construction this Memorial Day weekend. Gas prices are also rising around West Michigan.

Right now, gas prices in Kent County are around $3.70 per gallon. Prices in Muskegon County are about two cents lower, and in Ottawa County it's about 10 cents lower.

GasBuddy said there are still gas stations listing lower prices around West Michigan.

"If you're looking down at your gas gauge, if it's low, there's still a couple of stations out in Wyoming, that Kum & Go still about $3.19 a gallon. So is the Costco out in Wyoming, also about $3.18 in Cascade as well," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "Shop around because that's a nice 60 cent a gallon difference between the lows and the highs."

De Haan said some gas stations in Kent County are listing their gas as high as $3.79—but the good news is he expects those prices to drop in the coming days.

"Stations that are at $3.79 should be throttling back here through the course of the weekend," he said. "It's gonna be a very similar summer to what we saw last year, gas prices most of the time in the mid $3 a gallon range."

If your vehicle takes diesel, De Haan said those prices are expected to remain low throughout the summer, which usually happens each year. He said the current diesel prices are at their lowest since last July.
