Two people, dogs dead following plane crash near Mason County Airport

The Mason County Press shared that the weather conditions at the time were snowy with less than a mile of visibility.

LUDINGTON, Mich. — According to the Michigan State Police Sixth District, two people and their two dogs died in a plane crash in Ludington on Sunday morning.

Kim Cole, the Mason County Sheriff, said someone called the Mason/Oceana 911 Center around 10 a.m. reporting they saw a plane crash shortly after takeoff from the Mason County Airport.

The Mason County Sheriff's Office posted to Facebook around 11 a.m. stating they were responding to a report of a plane down around Myers near Rasmussen Road. The area is just outside of Ludington, near the Mason County Airport.

The Pere Marquette Twp. Fire Department posted to Facebook saying the plane crashed in a field and wasn't easily accessible.

In the post, the department also asked for assistance from other crews and said off-road vehicles would be needed to access the plane.

The department stated that the plane was on fire when crews arrived, but was put out.

According to MSP, a 43-year-old woman and 60-year-old man from Indiana and their two dogs were onboard the plane. They said the couple had been visiting family in Ludington.

The FAA said the plane was a single-engine Socata TBM-700.

Cole said the plane departed on the east/west runway, banked hard left and crashed into a field off of airport property.

The Mason County Press shared that the weather conditions at the time were snowy with less than a mile of visibility.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will be investigating the crash and provide any updates as they come.
