National Weather Service meteorologists say there is evidence of tornado damage in four West Michigan counties, in addition to a confirmed EF-1 tornado in the Ionia area.
A weather service crew conducting a survey of damage announced preliminary findings Sunday, Aug. 21. Although a complete investigation and final ratings still are to come from yesterday's severe weather, the agency has found the following:
- EF-1 tornado damage in Allegan, Ottawa and Van Buren counties
- EF-0 tornado damage in Kent County
In total, six western Michigan counties possibly saw some sort of tornado damage: Allegan, Ionia, Kent, Montcalm, Ottawa and Van Buren.
Confirmed tornadoes are rated on the Enhanced Fujita scale, which is a measure of the intensity of tornadoes based on their damage.
Estimated wind speeds for an EF-1 tornado range from 86-110 mph, while an EF-0 tornado produces estimated winds of 65-85 mph.
The weather service says its surveys will continue Monday, Aug. 22.
