The couple's adopted daughter Kala Scholtens tells 13 On Your Side her parents were married for more than 25 years.

"My parents were the best parents anyone could ask for," Kala wrote.

Kala says her father worked at ADAC and Lowe’s and loved working with the public, playing volleyball, going by the beach and doing cross stitch.

Her mother was a former Muskegon area teacher for around 20-years. She enjoyed fostering dogs and reading.

"My parents were both so kind and loving and didn’t deserve this," Kala wrote.
