GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Teams with Life EMS Ambulance will be training for a mass casualty event at GLC Live at 20 Monroe on Wednesday, where a mock emergency will be staged.

The event will simulate a scenario where faulty pyrotechnics injure concertgoers. Paramedics will be treating volunteers wearing "moulage" makeup that simulates wounds, and a debrief from experts will give trainees feedback afterward.

Staged training events like these help paramedics prepare for a lead paramedic role. As their training progresses, paramedics will learn how to handle on-site care, triage and other logistics. This training also gives them more real-life experience to prepare for actual emergencies.

“We’re bridging the gap from textbook to real-life applications to offer important preparedness and readiness skills for all of our paramedics operating in a 'lead' role,” said Patrick Cooney-Davis, a field training coordinator for Life EMS Ambulance. “Our paramedics appreciate the extra preparation.”

GLC Live at 20 Monroe hosting the event will help both venue staff and paramedics be prepared for any medical emergencies during shows or concerts. Mock mass casualty events and other staged emergencies are held regularly to help prepare EMS staff.

The training session will be held Wednesday at 1:15 p.m.
