Firekeepers Casino donating homegrown fresh produce to schools

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Firekeepers Casino is making a difference in their community by making sure schools have access to fresh local produce. Their goal is to have donate ten thousand pounds by the end of the school year.

The produce which is grown on the NHBP Pine Creek Reservation.

Their chefs also have a nutritious snack idea for your hectic after school schedules. It's  a snack that's going to keep kids going until dinner.

Here's a great recipe for granola bars that will help keep your kids fueled for the day!

GRANOLA BARS

Ingredients
6 Tablespoons Butter, melted
1/3 Cup Brown Sugar, packed
1/3 Cup Honey
1 ½ Teaspoons Vanilla Extract
1/8 Teaspoon Salt
2 Cups Quick Cooking Oats
1 ¾ Cups Puffed Rice Cereal
¼ Cup Flax Meal (optional)
1 Cup Mix-ins*

Method

  • Line a 9X13 pan with either foil or parchment paper and then coat it with cooking spray.
  • Combine the butter, brown sugar, honey, and vanilla.
  • Combine the salt, oats, cereal, flax meal, and add-ins.
  • Combine the wet with the dry and mix well.
  • Firmly press the mixture into the prepared pan and allow to set up for 2 hours.
  • Cut into bars before serving.

*Mix-ins (mini chocolate chips, dried fruit, nuts, and/or seeds)
