The Old Goat succeeds with 'down home meals'

In this week's edition of Let's Eat, James Starks and Dave Kaechele check out The Old Goat in Alger Heights.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — The Old Goat boasts an ever-changing menu of made from scratch comfort food.

Owner Corey Demint was a resident of the Alger Heights neighborhood. He came up with the concept behind The Old Goat after feeling like something was missing with their local restaurant scene.

"My wife and I always to be able to walk to a restaurant and it didn't exist," he explained. "The Old Goat turned into a neighborhood necessity that turned into my style of cooking."

Demint and his staff drew on their memories and experiences in childhood as they came up with the menu. The menu features tens of dishes that are fresh and made from scratch. You can even catch the nostalgia in the glasses or the plates.

"Our guests all the time will pick out a glass and go 'Wow! I can't believe this. We had that plate,'" he said.

With the start of May comes a new change in the menu. One of the changes I had a chance to try out was the Porker in the Pot. It is a braised buttermilk pickle pork shank. The monstrous comes with some delicious greens on the side but the pork steals the show. It's incredibly tender falls off the bone. The juicy pork shank will run you about $25 but it is definitely worth the price point.
