Local nonprofit builds more than 1,000 bikes for unsuspecting neighborhood

More than 250 elves came together to build more than 1,000 bikes for a giveaway to an unsuspecting neighborhood this holiday season.

On Saturday, Dec. 16, 250 volunteers with the local nonprofit Elves & More came together to build bikes for an unsuspecting neighborhood.

This is the nonprofit's 13th year holding it's annual "build day" event at Van's Delivery Service on Grand Rapids' West Side. Santa even made an appearance to check on the elves work.

Elves & More hopes to bring hope to all the kids in a neighborhood each year with a free bicycle giveaway.

The neighborhood for this year's giveaway has been chosen already. The volunteers will gather again on Dec. 23 at Van's Delivery Service then convey to the unsuspecting neighborhood. Local police and fire departments will help escort the caravan of semi trucks and cars.

In the last 12 years, Elves and more West Michigan has provided 14,000 new bikes and helmets, along with 5,000 treasure bags of toys and needed items to all the children in 10 different Grand Rapids neighborhoods.
