PORTAGE, Mich. — Not enough people were buying and using two of Pfizer's newest COVID-19 products, the company said Friday, so now 200 people are without a job.

Pfizer said usage of Comirnaty (a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine) and Paxlovid (a prescription COVID-19 treatment) were lower than expected.

These layoffs are part of what the company calls "an enterprise-wide cost realignment program to support future revenue expectations."

"Pfizer does not take these changes lightly. All decisions that impact people, processes and initiatives will be made with transparency, compassion and respect. We also remain committed to our patients and will continue to produce the COVID-19 vaccine to meet demand," a spokesperson for the drugmaker said Friday.

In 2022, the company announced a $750 million expansion to build a facility for modular aseptic processing, promising to also bring 300 jobs to the area.

The Michigan plant is Pfizer's largest manufacturing site.

The plant has been in operation since 1948 and has had a presence in the community through the legacy Upjohn Company since 1886.
