Ahead of winter storm, Holland shelter prepares to provide food and shelter

One of the women’s shelters provides child care services, comfortable rooms and nutritious meals - all at no cost.

HOLLAND, Mich. — Those facing home and food insecurity may be wondering what services are available with temperatures dropping and a snowstorm coming to West Michigan. A Holland-based shelter, Gateway Mission, is providing emergency shelter and food for families in need 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The non-for-profit organization’s executive director Jay Riemersma said with generosity from the community, the shelter has been able to provide temporary shelter, food and programs to those in need.

"We provide warm, safe living environment for our neighbors that are out on the street that come in and then programs, life-changing programs that provide them an opportunity to reset the trajectory of their lives," Riemersma said.

For more than 120 years, Gateway Mission has been providing shelter and services to West Michigan. With two shelters in Holland for men and women the organization offers a variety of programs. Those programs include childcare, the Gateway Forge Program and they also host several events throughout the year as well as volunteer opportunities.

Riemersma said he’s encouraging those without shelter not to brave the cold conditions outside. He said to direct anyone in need to one of the Gateway Mission locations.

"I would discourage those while well-intentioned, that go out into the woods and provide a blanket to people all you're doing is encouraging that individual to brave this winter storm, we want them to come into the shelter where they're safe and secure and can be properly treated. That’s our desire at Gateway Mission," Riemersma said.

Riemersma said the organization is expecting a 30% increase in individuals needing overnight shelter due to the cold conditions. The organization relies on help from the community, including local businesses and contributions from individuals.

"We're just thrilled to serve in this capacity, and we rely heavily on the generosity of those in our community, generosity in terms of individual contributions, businesses and the like," Riemersma said.

One of the women’s shelters provides child care services, comfortable rooms and nutritious meals - all at no cost. Riemersma says the help the organization provides is supposed to be a stepping stone to help those housed get back on their feet.

"We provide the clean, warm and safe place to sleep and a warm meal. I tell you what, it just warms our heart, because that's what we're called to, to do," Riemersma said. "We're here to help people, not give them a handout, but a hand up."

Gateway Mission accepts donations of new and gently worn clothing items including hats, coats and gloves at their drop-off location at 661 East Street in Holland. To make a monetary contribution, you can donate on their website.
