'He's, for sure, going to be known as a strong fighter' | Family of Holland man shot, killed over the weekend speaks out about his memory, legacy

A suspect was charged with Miguel Zamudio's death Monday afternoon. As police updates have continued, the family has focused on the memory of Miguel.

HOLLAND, Mich. — "He was a loving father, brother- just a loving human being always happy, always smiling," said Angela Zamudio-Ramos, as she remembered her brother, Miguel Zamudio.

Miguel was shot and killed over the weekend, allegedly by a suspect who is now in custody.

Leading up to Miguel's death, officers were called to the 300 block of West 19th Street around 2:15 p.m. Saturday on a report of a person shot.

Police found a 41-year-old Miguel in the driveway of a home with a gunshot wound to the head.

Officers transported Zamudio to the hospital. He was pronounced dead on Sunday.

But his family's focus is not on the tragedy. Instead, they're remembering the man who was, and whose memory remains for many.

"He loved hunting, he loved sports, he loved fishing," Angela said. "He was a great family man. And it's sad that he was taken too soon from his family."

His daughter, Alexys, described her father as a protector.

"He gave us everything he couldn't have," Alexys said. "He wanted to make sure that we always had the love and the support from him as he could give us. He was a very loving father."

On Monday afternoon, Jerell Lindsey appeared in court and was charged with Zamudio's murder. The charge carries a penalty of up to life in prison if Lindsey is convicted.

In their release Monday morning, police said the suspect in their report was not known to Zamudio.

"Nobody really knew who [the suspect] was," Angela said. "Like, my brother was going to go have lunch with his wife and his son at my parents' house."

"My brother's not someone to have conflicts with anybody," she continued. "He's someone that keeps to himself. He's a very family oriented man, and it's just sad that my nieces and nephews don't have him now."

With how quickly and how suddenly Miguel was taken from their lives, his family is hoping the situation and his legacy will encourage others to always hold their loved ones close.

"Just make sure that if you're in dispute with any family member, let it go, because you never know if you're going to have them around the next day," Angela said.

"He's, for sure, going to be known as a strong fighter," she said.

It's a trait that's shared by the family he left behind.

The family will be hosting a walk of life for Miguel. It is at Butterworth Hospital at noon Tuesday.
