Everything we know about 3 people found dead in the same neighborhood in Grand Rapids

It's been about a day since three people were killed in the Burton Heights neighborhood, and a toddler was found wandering the streets nearby. Here's what we know.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — It's been about a day since three people were killed in the Burton Heights neighborhood.

A 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman were found bloodied in the street in two separate areas just blocks from one another.

The man's toddler was found wandering alone about a mile away from the crime scene covered in blood. The boy wasn't hurt himself, but detectives believe the boy more than likely witnessed the crime.

Then, hours later and just five or six doors down from the original crime scene, a 32-year-old man was shot and killed.

It's not yet clear if the young couple's slaying and the shooting hours later are connected.

Grand Rapids Police said all three died from gun violence, and the medical examiner ruled their deaths homicides.

At this point, detectives have not shared any suspect or suspects.

Here's what we know:

WHO ARE THE VICTIMS

ARE THEY CONNECTED?

Possibly.

The Grand Rapids Police Department can't say with certainty the couple's killing and the man found shot dead in the same neighborhood are connected.

But the police chief says there's a very good chance they are.

"Oftentimes in situations like this, when there's a murder one after another in the same neighborhood, there's elements of perhaps retaliation, something like that. Here, we are still putting that together. Is it possible that they're completely unrelated in this as a coincidence? Yes, in my experience, that's, would be very, very unlikely. But we deal with a lot of unlikely things in this profession. So it's still a possibility," Winstrom said.

Detectives are considering many explanations about how the man and woman ended up in the street, as well as possible motives for their slayings like retaliation.

"When you have murders so close in time, and so close in geography, that's one of the things that we consider in examining, is this a case of revenge? Is it the same offender that's come back to seek further violence? Is it associates of the victims seeking revenge? All these things that you have to look at. So it definitely, as a police officer, gives you a lot more to think about," Winstrom said.

TODDLER FOUND UNHARMED BUT COVERED IN BLOOD

Police said Malik Eubanks' 2-year-old child was found wandering the streets alone about a mile away from the crime scene.

The boy had blood on him, but he wasn't hurt.

Authorities said the child, who is just shy of turning 3, is now with his mother.

"I'm sure that he will likely live with the impacts of the trauma, because although we don't have all the information at this time, the fact that his father was killed with a firearm, the fact that he had blood on him, indicates that most likely he was there when one or both of the original murders was committed," Chief Winstrom said.

"My heart goes out to the families of all three individuals. Then there is this little child who not only lost his father but had to witness this act, most likely... it's gotta be devastating."

VEHICLE OF INTEREST

Around 7:45 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 6, authorities tracked down a black Jeep about three miles away from the crime scene in the 900 block of Sherman Street SE.

Forensics crews gathered evidence and towed it away.

GRPD said the vehicle was searched in connection to the case, and was likely involved in one or both of the earlier murders.

The police department could not share who the vehicle belonged to or what they found inside.

SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS BACK IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

After a gruesome day just steps from their front doors, neighbors are asking for more peace of mind. Police previously installed trailer cameras in the neighborhood, but they were removed earlier this year.

Residents hoped Monday the cameras that once watched over their streets would return.

The police department installed a trailer equipped with cameras Monday evening.

The mobile trailers have solar panels to stay powered, and they have certain capabilities such as recording video and remote access and operation.

These trailers cost tens of thousands of dollars each. But it's worth it to Winstrom if they'll cause criminals to think twice, he says.

"If you commit a crime you know you're going to be doing it on tape," he said. "I think a lot of criminals will pick a more convenient place to do something illegal."

WHAT THE POLICE CHIEF SAYS

Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom was at both crime scenes Monday afternoon and evening and talked with neighbors.

“Yesterday was an incredibly tragic day for this neighborhood and for our city as the lives of three young people were taken from us,” said Chief Eric Winstrom. “I know that many in this neighborhood and elsewhere are fearful following these shocking murders, but at this time, we believe these were very targeted incidents and there is no threat to the broader community. Residents have been very forthcoming with information, and I urge anyone who knows anything to come forward. We can all work together to bring justice for these three victims and their loved ones.”

He said at the time he was confident his investigators would find those responsible for the slayings.

"Yeah, devastating is a perfect word for the impact. We lost three young people. Those three young people have loved ones. At least one of them was a father. Absolutely devastating in the fact that they were so young, you know, I think 19 and 20. Just the lives cut way, way too short. And I'm quite certain that when we figure out what the reason is, what the motive is, what the supposed reason is for the killing. It's not going to help at all that at all. We'll all still be quite devastated by this tragedy."
