GRPD: Watch out for 'funny money': 28 reports of counterfeit money being used in Grand Rapids

The money may have "COPY MONEY" or "FOR MOTION PICTURE" written on it.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Police in Grand Rapids are warning businesses and consumers to watch out for "funny money" circulating throughout the area.

According to Grand Rapids Police, there have been 28 reported cases of individuals trying to pass counterfeit money in Grand Rapids in the last 4 weeks -- a few frauds were successful.

Police say many noticed the "obvious" condition of the novelty money, which may have "COPY MONEY" or "FOR MOTION PICTURE" written on it. The counterfeit money may also have Chinese characters on it, and police say the paper will have a distinctly different feel -- much like printer paper or with a waxy coating.

Businesses should always inspect cash bills and mark with a currency marker. Anyone making transactions through online sites, like Let-Go, Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace, should be extra careful when receiving cash payments. Citizens should also make purchases in public places and if a large amount of cash is involved, to consider making the transaction in a bank lobby to help verify the authenticity.
