Court documents reveal new information about Holland home invasion, sexual assault

A preliminary hearing transcript provides new information about a home invasion and sexual assault in Holland Tuesday that ended in a suspect's arrest.

HOLLAND, Mich. — A transcript from the preliminary hearing of a man accused of sexually assaulting a Holland woman in her home early Tuesday morning is providing new information of the incident.

Dominique Asher Hawkins is accused of first-degree home invasion, second-degree criminal sexual conduct and assaulting, resisting, obstructing a police officer.

Laurence Matzen, an officer for the Holland Department of Public Safety, testified as a witness at the hearing Tuesday.

Matzen's testimony detailed the home invasion and sexual assault of the victim on the morning of April 16.

Matzen said that at about 2 a.m., officers were dispatched to a home on West 24th Street after receiving a report from the victim that someone was in her home.

According to Matzen's testimony, the victim was alone in her home with their 6-year-old daughter when she made the 911 call. The victim said that a tall man wearing a sweatshirt over his head opened her bedroom door and got into bed with her and began rubbing her leg.

Matzen testified that the victim said that her daughter was in the room with her when the man entered. The victim then went to another room with Hawkins, where he allegedly sexually assaulted her.

The testimony goes on to state that Hawkins and victim then went downstairs to the back door, which had been left open by Hawkins after entering the home, and found officers outside.

When the officers identified themselves, Hawkins ran to the front door and left the home. After a short chase, officers were able to arrest Hawkins.

Matzen said that Hawkins told police that he had been out jogging and didn't hear the officers because of earbuds in his ears.

Hawkins is also facing a habitual offender charge with a second offense notice. Court documents show that Hawkins also pleaded no contest to larceny in a building in 2019.

Hawkins is currently in custody and a bond will be set during his arraignment.
