GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — Traffic unit officers with the Grand Rapids Police Department went undercover to stop distracted drivers.
April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and on April 11 police were able to make 17 distracted driving stops, and wrote five citations for texting while driving.
Police posted about stops on Facebook saying, " While distracted driving may be easy to spot (you will likely see them every time you are on the road), Texting While Driving is more difficult to write a citation for since Michigan is currently not a hands-free state."
Michigan law prohibits texting while driving. For a first offense, motorists are fined $100. Subsequent offenses cost $200.
