Storm-ravaged Portage business broken into, stolen from the day after tornado

One suspect was 18 and another was a juvenile. The owner of the business said they want the suspects to be prosecuted.

PORTAGE, Mich. — Two people were caught breaking into and stealing from a storm-damaged business in Portage the day after severe weather, and a tornado, ravaged the town. 

According to the Portage Department of Public Safety, officers were called to the 2000 block of W. Centre Avenue around 9:30 p.m. for a report of people going into, and possibly stealing from, a business. 

When officers arrived they said they found two people and confirmed they had been in the business and stolen from it. 

Officers contacted the owner of the business, who said they wanted the individuals to be prosecuted. 

One suspect, an 18-year-old Galesburg man, was arrested and taken to the Kalamazoo County Jail. 

The case was submitted to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor's Office with the charge of breaking and entering a building with intent to commit larceny, police said. 

The other suspect, a juvenile girl from Kalamazoo, was brought back to her parents with charges being submitted to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor's Office for review. 

The Portage Department of Public Safety said police will be patrolling the areas of the city impacted by the recent storm more.
