BARRY COUNTY, Mich. - A 20-year-old Howell man's leg was severed by a boat propeller early Sunday evening on Gun Lake.

The Barry County Sheriff's Office said the man went off the side of the boat when it was turning, and the stern swung over the 20 year old, causing the propeller to cut off his leg.

Two doctors from Detroit were visiting family at the lake, and they quickly swam to help. They applied a tourniquet to slow the bleeding, and police said this likely saved the man's life.

The doctors were identifed by police as Dr. Lauren Azevedo and her husband Dr. Ryan Keating.

The victim was taken to Butterworth Spectrum Hospital, where his current condition is unknown.

Police later identified the victim as Cameron Cichosz, and the driver of the boat as 21-year-old Michal Butzke of Allegan. Butzke was lodged at the Barry County Correctional Facility because of the accident.

The accident is still under investigation, but police said alcohol is a contributing factor.
