17-year-old girl killed in crash on Knapp Street

She was hit by a 16-year-old boy heading west on Knapp, police say.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A teen is dead after getting hit by a car near East Beltline in Grand Rapids Monday evening, the Kent County Sheriff's Office confirms.

Deputies say a 17-year-old girl was walking near the area of the 3700 block of Knapp Street NE when she was hit by a car around 5 p.m. 

First responders tried to save her life, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe she was hit by a 16-year-old boy from Grand Rapids Township driving west in an SUV.

Deputies said Knapp Street Northeast was closed between Dunnigan Avenue and Maguire. People were asked to seek an alternate route while crews cleaned up and investigated. The roadway reopened around 7:30 p.m.
