Battle Creek Police investigating after shots fired near school

Police said after investigating, they found that a person in an SUV fired multiple gunshots at a second vehicle.

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — On Tuesday, some schools in Battle Creek were placed on lockdown due to shots fired around 1:37 p.m.

The shots were heard near Battle Creek High School in downtown Battle Creek. Police said after investigating, they found that a person in an SUV fired multiple gunshots at a second vehicle.

The second vehicle was being driven by a 55-year-old man. His 20-year-old son was also in the car.

The shooter was driving behind the man and his son on West Van Buren Street when he shot at their vehicle, striking it.

Battle Creek High School and other schools in the area were placed on lockdown for around 40 minutes while police investigated.

Police said they no longer feel there is a threat to the community, as they believe it was a targeted attack.

No injuries were reported and police are still investigating.
