An alleged thief was fatally shot by the owner of a trucking company that was making a meat delivery at Eastern Market on Wednesday morning, Detroit police said.

At a press conference, Assistant Chief Arnold Williams told media that the incident happened in the area of Riopelle and the Fisher Service Drive.

Three trucks from a Ypsilanti-based company were delivering meat when one of the delivery drivers saw two men attempting to steal from the back of a truck and engaged in "a scuffle," Williams said.

The owner of the trucking company was on site and saw the scuffle happening. Williams said the owner, who believed one of the alleged meat thieves had either pulled a weapon or was reaching for one, drew his handgun and fatally shot one of the suspects in the head.

The second suspect then fled from the scene on foot, Williams said.

Williams said the delivery truck driver who was engaged in the scuffle received a non-fatal wound to the leg that's believed to be from a gunshot as well. However, he said police are not sure how that wound happened and are continuing to investigate.

Williams said the owner of the company, who fired the fatal shot, is in custody, and his weapon was recovered from the scene.

Neither of the alleged thieves is believed to have been armed with a firearm, but Williams said the man who was shot did have a box cutter in his possession.

Further investigations of the incident are ongoing and Williams said police are working on submitting the case to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office for review.
