Detroit Police Chief discusses safety strategy for NFL Draft in April

Chief James E. White says while he anticipates the current safety strategy to remain the same, the department will study this week's shooting in Kansas City as well.

DETROIT — One day after a mass shooting at Kansas City's Super Bowl victory celebration, the Detroit Police Chief has an update on security measures for the NFL Draft, which is coming to the city in a couple of months.

"I lose sleep over this stuff every day," said Chief James E. White. "I'm always concerned."

That's why Chief White is making sure his department is fully prepared for the NFL Draft in April. He says his department will take a close look at what happened in Kansas City.

"We're going to study it like we study, unfortunately, the other events that have happened throughout our country already this year," said Chief White. "Just to learn from what happened, what protocols were in place, what protocols weren't in place."

But he doesn't anticipate any changes to the current plan. He said the draft is a different kind of event that requires a different strategy. That includes gun-free zones that visitors will have to be checked before entering.

"We'll also have undercover operators or our officers operating in an area to ensure that no one is bringing weapons in," said Chief White.

He also pointed to previous events the city has hosted that they will draw safety inspiration from as well.

"We have hosted everything from Taylor Swift to Beyoncé, the Lions this year did their thing very well," said Chief White. "They brought about 70,000 fans every week that they had a home game to our city."

Chief White also said that they have partnerships at the local, state and federal levels, anticipating help from the Wayne County Sheriff, Michigan State Police and even the FBI when the NFL Draft comes to town on April 25.
