Grand Haven braces for its potentially second busiest summer weekend

Three major events will be taking place in the next few days.

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. - Community officials in Grand Haven are expecting this weekend to be the second busiest weekend of the summer. Three major events will be taking place in the next few days.

The annual Grand Haven Art Festival will take over the downtown area, June 23 & June 24. The event transforms Washington Avenue into an outdoor gallery. It will include artists from across Michigan and the country.

Meanwhile, Soccer in the Sand will be at Grand Haven State Park. It will begin on Friday, June 22 and run through Sunday, June 24.

The Queens Cup, a yacht race that sails from Milwaukee to Grand Haven will be making a comeback to the area for the first time in eight years.

“From what I hear, Soccer in the Sand is at its largest year. They have the most number of teams they ever had. Our event [Art Festival], we usually expect around 15,000 over the course of the two-day show and that could be more based on the other events going on in town so it’s going to be a busy weekend down here," Mary Sherman, a Chamber official and organizer for the Art Festival, said.

Those with the Chamber say there should be plenty of parking for these events but with such a big influx in traffic, they urge everyone to give themselves some extra time for travel.
