Memorial Day in West Michigan | Events to honor fallen service members

West Michigan is celebrating the holiday with parades, ceremonies, flyovers and even a pancake breakfast.

MICHIGAN, USA — Monday, May 27 is Memorial Day this year and there are lots of opportunities for West Michigan communities to honor those who have died in service to their country.

When the holiday was first established shortly after the Civil War it was called Decoration Day and was a time when people would lay flowers on the graves of soldiers who died in battle. 

In 1971, the holiday was officially designated as Memorial Day and was set to be recognized on the last Monday in May each year.
