Mother and infant son killed in car crash in southwest Michigan

The crash occurred when the driver of a Jeep Wrangler crossed the centerline of M-51 and collided head-on with a van.

UPDATE, May 27: The two-month-old baby, Xavier Martinez, died from injuries sustained in the crash.

DECATUR, Mich. - A 25-year-old mother was killed in a crash in Decatur, and her two month old baby is in critical condition.

The crash occurred on M-51 near 89th Avenue around 9 p.m. on Friday night, May 25. According to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office, a 42-year-old woman was driving a Jeep Wrangler north on M-51. She crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a van that was being driven by the 25-year-old.

The driver of the van, Daria Malaga from Elkhart, Ind., died of her injuries, while her infant son, who was restrained in a car seat, is currently in critical condition with multiple injuries.

The 42-year-old woman was flown by helicopter to the hospital with multiple injuries, and she is now in stable condition.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
