Dash cam shows wrong-way driver, suspected of driving drunk, on Michigan freeway

Dash cam footage shows deputies attempting to stop the driver and shut down the freeway to prevent head-on crashes.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Macomb County woman is facing charges after allegedly driving drunk and driving the wrong way on the freeway.

The incident happened on Monday, March 18 just before midnight. A black Dodge Ram, driven by 37-year-old Alexandria Marie Remington, was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of M-53.

Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle and worked to shut down the freeway to avoid any possible head-on crashes. Remington evaded deputies for a short time before eventually stopping.

The Shelby Township Police Department released dashcam footage of the brief pursuit and attempt to stop Remington.

After she stopped, deputies say they could smell alcohol on her breath when talking to her. She refused a breath test but underwent several field sobriety tests. She was placed under arrest and is now facing charges for operating while intoxicated and possessing analogue substances.

“I am thankful for our officer’s quick response to alert other drivers and shut down the freeway, helping to avoid a serious head-on crash," said  Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Shelide. "Our department will continue to have zero tolerance for drivers who choose to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs in Shelby Township.”

Remington was arraigned on March 19 in the 41-A District Court. She was given a $25,000 cash/surety bond.
