Sunrise Sidelines: Forest Hills Northern

The Huskies of FHN are 2-2 on the football field and facing a struggling Lowell team Friday, Sept. 21, but there's much more to Northern than the gridiron.

GRAND RAPIDS, TOWNSHIP, Mich. - It's the third Sunrise Sidelines of 2018 and this week we take a trip east of downtown Grand Rapids to Forest Hills Northern.

FHN has a reputation locally as a diverse, global school with a lot to offer and it didn't take long for us to see what makes the school so special.

We took a trip to their broadcast class, where not everyone is planning on a career in TV, but they say what they're learning right now will translate big time later in life.

FHN also has a class where kids are able to create their own fun by manufacturing recreational tools like paddle boards. It made Kamady and Laura super jealous.

Project Next is a chance for freshmen to get ahead on some of their most important subjects. Some of them are learning about fighting the West Nile Virus, and with all the mosquitoes we've been dealing with, that project could not possibly have been more timely.

Every school we visit has a character or two who make going to school fun. At FHN, one of those faculty members is Mr. Duffie. We got to know him thanks to some of the most pressing questioning in modern journalism, including: "What do you like better, ninjas or pirates?"

Our Classroom Crashers teamed up with Bruiser the Husky to help meet some of the students in the Spanish and choir classes.

During the 6 a.m. hour we talked to a number of organizations including the student government, which is planning homecoming events on Oct. 13. They're also planning their biggest fundraiser of the year, Unity Day.

The marching band is putting on a show this year based off the music of Styx. You'll hear all the classics from the legendary band.

The dance team put on a great performance for us to the tune of Flo Rida's "My House."

We got a big surprise during the messy game when one of the participants decided to go rogue and take a different route to victory.

And finally, we got to congratulate today's $200 winner!

Thank you to the Forest Hills Northern Huskies for your hospitality. Your kids showed up early and your staff knew just how to bring the energy. We appreciate you!

WE LOVE YOU, FHN! Thank you for hosting us! 💙 #sunrisesidelines
