A 32-year-old man who was shot in the head Sunday evening on Ivory Avenue in Muskegon Heights has died from the injury.
It happened at around 8:00 p.m. outside the East Park Manor apartment complex. Muskegon Heights Police Chief Joseph E. Thomas Jr. says one man is being held on a weapon charge, and to be questioned about the shooting. Thomas is calling that man a "person of interest."
Thomas is not releasing the victim's name at this time.
Witnesses say they heard around 15-gun shots from two different guns.
Police hope security cameras placed in various location at East Park Manor have video that will assist in their investigation.
A police task force is investigating the shooting. Police are asking the public for assistance. Tips can be called into Muskegon County Silent Observer at (231) 72-CRIME.
Carolyn Benard's grandson was the second person injured in the shooting.
7-year old J'Anthony Bell was playing on the sidewalk outside his home when three shots from down the street injured his face, wrist, and shoulder.
"I'm so tired of this," said Benard. "Kids can't even come outside and play." Bell was treated and released from the hospital late Sunday night. The injury to his shoulder needs additional medical treatment.
Benard says Bell's older brother pushed him to the ground during the shooting and saved his life.
"I think he would have got shot, really hit," said Benard.
Bell's parents say often it's people from outside East Park Manor who start trouble in their neighborhood. Benard and other neighbors say they want a street where they can hold outdoor activities for kids and not have to worry about their safety..
"We always do stuff for the kids, put the projector out here, and watch cartoons, make them s'mores." said Benard.
She and her grandson have advice for community members and those from outside Muskegon Heights. "I think they all need to put their guns down and talk it out or something," said Benard. "Don't shoot," said Bell.
The Muskegon Heights Police chief says his department is asking the city's Housing Commission to better enforce rental agreements to make sure only registered residents are living in the apartments.
