GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — At last, southbound US-131 is back open. Just in time for the holiday weekend.

The highway opened just before 11 a.m. on Thursday, said MDOT Spokesperson John Richard.

However, double lane closures and ramp closures will remain as crews remove traffic control, equipment, barrels, etc.

Richard said this could lead to traffic still feeling more congested and hectic because crews have to close down the southbound ramp to eastbound and westbound I-196. They also have to shutter eastbound and westbound I-196 ramps to southbound to wrap up the project.

“Crews have to pick up traffic control, they've got to get equipment out of there, they're going to make sure everything's buttoned up and open before the holiday weekend,” said Richard.

Everything should be back open before 3 p.m. on Friday, according to Richard.
