Teen injured after accidentally shooting self in leg with family member's gun

The teen was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Deputies say the gun owner did not know the child had found the gun.

MECOSTA COUNTY, Mich. — A 13-year-old is recovering after accidentally shooting themself in the leg with a family member's gun, deputies say.

The incident happened around 10:45 p.m. Sunday in Green Township after the teen allegedly found a family member's gun. The gun accidentally discharged, hitting the teen in the leg.

Deputies say family members provided aid until first responders arrived. The child was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputies say the gun was found without the knowledge of the owner.
