Durral Brooks remains loyal to Michigan men's basketball

"Phat Phat" has remained loyal to the Wolverines even after all of the other 2024 recruits in Michigan's signing class jumped ship after Juwan Howard was fired.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School boys basketball star Durral Brooks is ready for his next chapter at the University of Michigan.

"Phat Phat" has remained loyal to the Wolverines even after all of the other 2024 recruits in Michigan's signing class jumped ship after Juwan Howard was fired after five seasons in Ann Arbor.

The 2024 Michigan Mr. Basketball Award winner wanted to keep his options open after the decision to move on from Howard.

“I’m sorry to hear that Coach Howard won’t be back," Brooks told 13 On Your Side on March 15. "I really enjoyed getting to know him, his family, and all his coaches on staff. At the moment I’ll be waiting to hear who the next Coach is and go from there.”

Brooks said he met with the new coach Dusty May in person in Ann Arbor and loved what he was about. He is excited to join him on campus in the summer.

"It always felt like home," Brooks said. "Even if I were to go somewhere else, I would need a new coach anyway. I was committed to the school. Obviously, I was committed to Juwan. Me and Coach May, talking with him, hearing everything about him, his family life and other stories. I felt like that would still be a great place for me to go. Great coach. Great guy. I am excited to be able to play under him."

Brooks said it was never a stressful process for him. He committed to the school and he's ready for the opportunity head. He is rated as a three-star recruit by 247sports.
