This week's Meijer Scholar Athlete is Tommy Cavanaugh

Cavanaugh is also a fundraiser co-chair of both the Billy Bear Hug foundation and the leadership youth development club at the high school.

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Our newest Meijer Scholar Athlete of the week has already been named a Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Scholar Athlete in Division 3. Now, he is being honored on Channel 13.

East Grand Rapids High School student Tommy Cavanaugh is a three-sport star - playing football, basketball and baseball. He is a captain in both football and basketball.

Cavanaugh is also a fundraiser co-chair of both the Billy Bear Hug Foundation and the leadership youth development club at the high school.

On top of that, he's in the national honor society with a 4.7 GPA.

The senior Pioneer says being a good student-athlete comes down to his mindset.

"Bringing the same competitive attitude that you bring to the court or whatever sport you are playing and bringing it to the classroom," Cavanaugh said. "Not competing against others of course but competing against yourself. It's very hard to balance it. There are times I have been at a baseball field since 11 p.m. and I have a tough test in the morning. Just try to manage your stress the best you can and compete the best way you can on the court or whatever you do athletically and then in the classroom bringing the same attitude. I've always had goals of wanting to go to Michigan as a little kid so just working towards that."

Cavanaugh said he is 95 percent sure he is going to Michigan. If he goes to Ann Arbor, he plans to study finance to follow in his big brother's footsteps.
