GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — West Michigan's weather pattern will drastically change Friday as cold air digs into the region.

High temperatures stay in the 40s and low 50s through the weekend -- keep in mind, highs average in the mid to upper 60s this time of year!

One of the coldest periods will be Friday night into Saturday morning.

Lows plummet into the 20s away from the lakeshore. Temperatures this cold for several hours will threaten exposed buds on trees and plants.

The biggest threat comes to fruit trees, which have begun to bud. Unless properly protected, farmers could face the killing of a large percentage of their crop.

Temperatures in the mid to upper 20s could bring a 10% loss to unprotected fruit trees. Slightly colder temperatures could bring a 90% loss.

After Friday night, low temperatures will improve the next several nights, but will still stay in the low 30s with frost possible.

Another cold night will be Monday night into Tuesday. Watch for freeze warnings and advisories to be issued.
