A near record hot forecast for Super Bowl LVI

Near record heat is forecast this weekend in Los Angeles! Here's a look at what football fans can expect!

LOS ANGELES — UPDATE: The Associated Press reports the temperature at kickoff was 82 degrees, after dropping from 85 earlier in the day. This would make Super Bowl LVI the second hottest ever as of kickoff.

It's finally here, the weekend many around the country wait for all year long. That's right, Super Bowl Sunday is this weekend and it could be one for the record books!

Now, being a meteorologist, I am not talking about the game itself, but the weather conditions that will be expected come game time. This year is going to be hot, possibly even to the level of setting some new records for the Los Angeles region!

Heat advisories are in place from now through the 6 pm hour on Sunday. Since the game kicks off at 3:30 PST, we will still be right in the middle of that peak afternoon heat.

As for that peak heating, current model forecasts are suggesting temperatures could surge into the mid and upper 80s! The forecast below is from the Friday evening run of our GRAF weather model.

These temperatures could not only shatter records for Los Angeles, but also for the Super Bowl itself. The hottest Super Bowl on record was the 1973 game, Super Bowl VII, also in Los Angeles with a kickoff temp of 84°. The overall record for L.A. on Sunday is 85° set in 2006.
