2 arrested, charged for New Year's Eve shooting inside Walmart

Two men are accused of getting into an altercation with another man over a cellphone at Walmart Supercenter on 54th Street. Two people were hurt in the shooting.

WYOMING, Mich. — Two people were arrested and arraigned a week after a shooting inside a Walmart in Wyoming, police say.

Authorities said around 6 p.m. on New Year's Eve, two suspects wearing masks got into an altercation with a male victim near the checkout lines at the front of the Walmart Supercenter on 54th Street. Police say at least 10 rounds were fired.

That victim, who was shot, showed up to a hospital later for treatment. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The second victim, a woman who authorities said was not a target, was also struck. She is also getting treatment and is also expected to survive.

After a week-long search, 21-year-old Camrin Carpenter and 21-year-old Latrell Young have been arrested and charged in the shooting.

According to court documents filed in the case, Carpenter and Young are accused of confronting a man inside the Walmart and trying to take his cellphone.

That's when Carpenter is accused of pulling out his pistol, so the man tried to get away from the pair by running through the store.

Prosecutors accuse Young of firing at the man at close range during the chase, and the man was hit four times. Despite that, he was able to escape and showed up at a hospital for treatment.

Both Carpenter and Young went looking for the man in the Walmart parking lot to try to find him before they ran from the store.

Both men were carrying concealed pistols at the time, authorities said.

Carpenter is charged with Assault with Intent to Murder and Armed Robbery, as well as two more felony charges.

Young is charged with Assault with Intent to Murder, Discharge of a Weapon Inside of a Building Causing Serious Impairment and three other felony charges.

Both were arraigned in the 62-A District Court Monday.

At the time of the shooting, the store was full and was evacuated. The store closed for the night, but reopened the next morning.
