BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — No one was injured in a fire that damaged three Battle Creek apartments on Saturday evening, according to the Battle Creek Fire Department.

The department said crews were called to 111 West Street around 10:20 p.m. for a report of a structure fire.

When crews arrived, they found a light haze of smoke in the hallway of an apartment building. Once they investigated further, they said they discovered the fire was coming from a vent fan in a first-floor apartment.

Crews pulled drywall from the ceiling to access the fire and put it out. They said the fire did reach the second floor, where a sprinkler was activated.

The department said no one was injured in the fire but three apartments were damaged and water had to be shut off to the building for maintenance to fix a broken sprinkler.

The American Red Cross was called to help the neighbors who couldn't stay in their apartments.
