'HANDS IN THE AIR!' | Suspects arrested, standoff situation in Ottawa Co. fire station ends with third crash

An hours-long standoff ended after the suspects smashed through the Blendon Twp. fire station and then slammed into a second police cruiser.

OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. — An early morning car chase turned into a crash and standoff at an Ottawa County fire station, the Sheriff's Office said. It ended with another crash and the two suspects being taken away in handcuffs.

Police were called to the area of 64th Avenue and Baldwin Street around 5:15 a.m. On the report of a car parked suspiciously on the road.

When police arrived, they found two suspects in the car who were uncooperative. The 22-year-old woman driving and her passenger, an 18-year-old man, drove away.

In the pursuit, the car hit a police cruiser. One deputy is going to the hospital to be checked, but is not seriously injured.

The car then rammed into the Blendon Township Fire Station on Tyler Street, breaking through the garage doors.

Deputies believe no one is injured in that crash, either.

The suspects were awake and conscious throughout the standoff, and crisis negotiators attempted to get them out of the car by speaking to them on the phone and in-person. Capt. Jake Sparks says there was not much rational conversation with the suspects.

Deputies could be heard yelling "come out with your hands in the air!" and "step out of the vehicle, and you will not be harmed!" throughout the more than three-hour-long standoff.

Around 8:20, the car reversed suddenly and slammed into another police cruiser. It was the same cruiser hit earlier in the morning.

Shots were heard at the scene. It was later confirmed deputies fired non-lethal shots to subdue the suspects. Deputies then arrested the two suspects, who were still uncooperative.

The suspects were taken to a hospital to be checked. They could face charges like fleeing and eluding and resisting and obstructing an officer.

A police cruiser and a fire apparatus were damaged during the incident.

The suspects have not been identified yet.
