BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. — A Tennessee man was shot and killed by a police officer near St. Joseph Monday night.

Police say St. Joseph Township officers were performing a welfare check on a 42-year-old semi-truck driver from Tennessee. The man allegedly drove his truck into the patrol car, then crashed into a nearby home.

The driver then ran from the scene. Officers followed, and after a "violent altercation," an officer shot the driver.

He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The involved officer sustained minor injuries. He has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing.

The Michigan State Police is handling the investigation.
