KALAMAZOO, Mich. — No one was injured in two different house fires on Friday evening in Kalamazoo, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

Around 8:30 p.m. officers received a call from a woman coughing inside a home with smoke detectors going off in the background.

Dispatch was able to trace her number to a home in the 3900 block of Ash Street where officers found a home with heavy fire.

KDPS made sure all residents made it out of the home safely before fighting the fire. They said it took longer to get the fire out due to construction happening in the home and strong winds.

Officers said in total it took about an hour to put the fire out and an additional two hours to get the hot spots out.

Around 9:30 p.m., while officers were still fighting the fire on Ash Street, they received a call about a house fire in the 800 block of Grant Street.

When officers arrived they found a home with fire coming from the windows on the second floor. They also found a person trapped on the second-floor porch, who they were able to help get down and away from the fire.

Officers were able to put the fire out within 20 minutes.

While investigating the scene, officers said they determined the fire was likely started by arson and arrested a Kalamazoo resident they believe was related to the crime.
