LANSING, Mich. — 53 Michiganders won $1 million or more playing the lottery in 2023.

The largest prize won in Michigan was $8.75 million by a man in Kent County playing Lotto 47. He purchased that winning ticket at Paris Spirits & Wine, located at 2871 East Paris Southeast in Kentwood.

The 60-year-old Kent County man, who chose to remain anonymous, said winning the lotto has been a life goal.

“I have been playing the Lottery for years and dreaming of winning big,” said the player. “I checked the ticket Sunday morning and couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw I matched all the numbers. I called for my wife and had her look the ticket over to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. Once my wife confirmed I’d won, she called for my son to have him triple check the ticket too. We were all stunned!”

The Michigan Lottery handed out over $3 billion in prizes this year, with $98 million going to the 53 winners of $1 million or more.

There were more than 250 other big winners in 2023, winning prizes of $100,000 or more.

The Michigan Lottery says that over 97 cents of every dollar spent on lottery tickets is returned to the state through contributions to the School Aid Fund, prizes to players, and payouts to vendors and retailers.

The Michigan Lottery estimates that more than $1.3 billion was provided to Michigan's public schools in 2023. The Lottery has raised over $28 billion to support Michigan education since 1972.
