LOWELL, Mich. - The Lowell Police Department said it received a threat of violence against Lowell Middle School on Tuesday.
The threat was made using a fake Instagram account created in a similar name to a current student. The parents of that student brought the account information to the attention of Lowell Police late Tuesday afternoon.
Police authorized search warrants for information on Facebook and Instagram, as well as an internet service provider. When the information was obtained, Lowell Police and the Kent County School Resource officer went to the suspect's home where a confession was obtained.
In a statement from the school district, Gregory Pratt, superintendent of LAS, said that although the suspect had no intent or means to carry out the threat, action will be taken both criminally and by the district.
"Threats of this nature are considered incredibly serious by law enforcement, the courts and Lowell Area Schools," the statement read.
The case will be reviewed by the Kent County Prosecutor's Office for an appropriate decision.
