GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Redhawks have a new head football coach.

Grand Rapids Public Schools announced Curtis Andrews will serve as head football coach of Union High School.

He's not new to coaching at a high level.

Andrews served on coaching teams for Grand Rapids Community College, Grand Rapids Christian High School, Hope College, and Forest Hills Northern High School. He also served as the Assistant Athletic Director for GRCC.

Riverside Middle School knows him as Dean Andrews, as he served on the leadership team there.

He's excited to bring his passion for education and athletics to the football field.

“I'm super excited. I mean, really super excited just to make that impact on the young people,” Coach Andrews said. “Everybody's got a different level of potential. But it's going to be up to us as our coaching staff to make sure we maximize that.”

Union High School Athletic Director Justin Walker said Andrews' character is what set him apart in the selection process.

“We look forward to seeing Coach Andrews engage with our scholar-athletes at Union and take the team to the next level,” GRPS Executive Director of Athletics Kurt Johnson said. “We know he can inspire our scholars because he has been doing so for years.”

The Union High School community will get to learn more about Andrews at a "Meet the Coach" event. Those details will be announced at a later date.

The previous head coach, Don Fellows, was suspended from his position and fired following a drunk driving arrest and leaving the scene of an accident.

In December, he pleaded guilty to two charges, those being operating his vehicle with a BAC of .17 or more and failure to stop after a collision. In doing so, he avoided jail time.

The charges of operating while intoxicated, failing to stop at the scene of a personal injury accident and refusing to give a preliminary breath test were dropped.

When Fellows joined Union's football program in 2020, the Red Hawks had lost 43 straight games and hadn't won since 2015.

He was instrumental in rebuilding the high school football program.

In total, Fellows has 28 years of experience as a football coach, with 18 of those years as the head of a football program.
